Appalachian State University is excited to announce the launch of the Campus Sustainability Initiative, a multi-year effort to reduce carbon emissions, expand renewable energy, and promote responsible resource use across all departments. Over the next three years, we’ll focus on energy-efficient building upgrades, waste reduction programs, and enhanced sustainability education for students, faculty, and staff. This initiative reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship and hands-on learning that reaches beyond the classroom.

A central component of the initiative is the expansion of solar capacity on academic buildings and residence halls. Facilities Management has identified priority rooftops for installation, and student research teams will participate in monitoring energy production and sharing findings through capstone projects and campus forums. By integrating operational improvements with experiential learning, we aim to create a living laboratory that advances both institutional goals and student success.

Community engagement will be key. The Office of Sustainability will host monthly volunteer days, where participants can support campus gardens, learn composting techniques, and help pilot a zero-waste event toolkit for student organizations. Faculty partners will also introduce new course modules focused on climate action, systems thinking, and data analysis, giving students the tools to design solutions that can scale.
